Kentucky Sucks

Yeah, I said it...Kentucky sucks. Not only do the Gamecocks beat them every year in football, but they can't get their signs right on TV. Wonder what these rednecks had on their mind other than the game. Taken by my friend Brandon while he was watching the game...DVR for cable was made for this reason.

My buddy James called me on the 11th and asked me if I wanted to go to Georgetown with him to do some fishing. I checked the weather report and it said that winds would be 15-20mph, highs in the 60's and a 80% chance of rain, so I thought, why not? We left at 5 in the morning, got the boat in a little past 7 and took off. We found some holes, but with everything being stirred up below us, we were constantly on the move from spot to spot. Setting the anchor wasn't too bad, the worst part of the day is when we were moving and the splashes from the rough water would hit us, that's what sucked the most. James caught a toad fish, at one location we could tell the flounder were there because they kept biting the bodies off our minnows and leaving just the head on the hook. Finally the rain came down hard and we were wet, cold, and wind burned with no fish to take home. But hey, a day on the water is a better than a day at work.

Can't Fish...Par 3 Baby

Before the shark fishing expedition that took place at the bottom of this blog, we were supposed to go out for a "ten hour tour". As always in my life, Mother Nature likes to throw her 2 cents in and we had a rain delay. Not that it was raining, but the seas were a little higher than some folk like. We found out 2 days later that 3 waterspouts had touched down not far from where we were...oh well, I guess I lost my cool being chased by a waterspout story...FUCK!!!! Par 3 with no regulations here come the Scallywags, and the best quote of the day came when Ben left a bottle of beer at the beginning of a hole, and the "Greenskeeper" caught us on the last hole and said...."Boy's (even though most of us were close to 30) the game of life is alot like the game of golf...even though its not, you don't wanna leave your trash around." Whatever sense that makes to you, take it..and learn from it. He might of said something greater than that, but we were just a little too drunk to make sense of it.

Deepest Living Fish

Deepest living fish found...one more for me to catch

From Current.com

The "deepest ever" living fish have been discovered according to scientists.

A UK-Japan team found the 17-strong shoal at depths of 7.7km (4.8 miles) in the Japan Trench in the Pacific - and captured the deep sea animals on film. The scientists have been using remote-operated landers designed to withstand immense pressures to comb the world's deepest depths for marine life.

On film, the fish, known as Pseudoliparis amblystomopsis, can be seen darting about in the darkness of the depths, scooping up shrimps. Monty Priede from the University of Aberdeen said the 30cm-long (12in), deep-sea fish were surprisingly "cute".

The deepest record for any fish is Abyssobrotula galatheae, which was dredged from the bottom of the Puerto Rico Trench at a depth of more than 8km (5 miles) in 1970. However, it was dead by the time it reached the surface. The previous record for any fish to have been spotted alive was thought to have stood at about 7km (4 miles).

Shrimping 1

September and October mean a lot down south. College football, hunting and shrimping come to mind. Last night, the original scallywag, Steve O'Harra and I went fishing and shrimping down in McClellanville SC. I did all of the boat work, believe me it took awhile before I got my sea legs, and Steve did all of the casting. We started off fishing in a particular hole, we did ok, caught about 7 fish that we couldn't keep. 1 flounder and a the rest were spot tail. We left there and went to Steve's shrimping spot, put the poles down and baited them, then left about about a half mile away to a oyster bed and fished a bit there. We caught about another 10 spots then went back to the poles. We loaded a cooler full (legal limit) in an hour and a half. Here are a few pics.

Cape Romain

I went down to Mt Pleasant 14 days ago to take my dog for surgery. At first they thought it was cancer, but as the tests revealed, he only has a saliva gland problem. I was going to crash at my friends house, and he didn't get off of work until 5, so I had almost 8 hours to kill by myself. After I dropped off Samson I headed North on Highway 17 and found a little outpost called Sewee Outpost. I found out from some shrimpers that there was a pier not to far away so I bought some bait and headed out. I didn't have the right rod and reel combo to do much of anything, a light weight rig, but I didn't stop me from going out there and just having some me time. I befriended an older Gullah woman, whose voice reminded me of all the culture that surrounds Charleston. She goes out there everyday and hunts for fish and crab. The wind conditions were horrible, but all in all it was a good day. I got to take in the sights, met some people walking up and down the pier, listen to some Band of Horses on the I-Pod...and in the end I caught 2 crabs and 1 spot tail. What a day...

Shark Fishing

In July of 2008 5 of us chartered the boat, The Longway, with Chris Long. I had been on a previous charter with Chris before, and had not been let down on that trip. We went bottom fishing that time and caught a full load. I could tell that Chris didn't want to go to the Gulf Stream that time so he mentioned shark fishing in North Carolina so we all agreed that was fine. The first hour or so we were trolling for croakers and chum, running nets on the bottom of the sea floor. We pulled up shrimp, jellyfish, seaweed...everything that lives on the bottom of the ocean. After we had the make shift live wells full with croaker we headed north to Holden Beach, NC. We pulled up probably 30-40 sharks throughout the day, I caught the first keeper. You are only allowed one big black tip shark, per boat. Since the one I caught was the first biggest one, we kept that one...Dane did catch the biggest one of the day, his was at least 100lbs, while mine was around 90lbs. Enjoy...
